Everything You Need to Know About Obtaining a Tourist Visa for Iran

Information + Necessary Documents + Application Form

Important Notice: Due to the state of war in Iran following the Israeli attack in July 2025, the Ministry of Intelligence, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Tourism, issued a new set of special wartime visa regulations on August 1, 2025. These regulations were suspended on October 4, 2025, but may be re-enforced at any time for security reasons. What follows outlines the conditions for obtaining an Iranian visa during peacetime and under normal procedures.

Iran Visa information, Required Documents and application form

The government of the Islamic Republic of Iran believes that tourist visa issuance should be based on the principle of reciprocity. This means if an Iranian citizen is required to pay a certain fee or meet specific requirements to obtain a visa for another country, nationals of that country will face at least the same fees or conditions when applying for an Iranian visa. In some cases, the rules may be more relaxed, while in others, they may be stricter. Because of this, figuring out how to get a visa can be pretty confusing for tourists planning a trip to Iran.

In this guide, you’ll find the most comprehensive and up-to-date requirements for obtaining an Iranian tourist visa. I’ve included the latest policy updates as of July 16, 2025. Yes, this article is detailed—but by reading it through, you’ll get all the essential information in one place, saving you time and hassle.

Citizens of all countries except Israel (referred to as “Occupied Palestine” in the official terminology of the Islamic Republic of Iran) are eligible to apply for an Iranian visa. However, due to diplomatic considerations, applications from citizens of certain countries may be rejected.

Yes, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran has an online e-visa application system available for foreign travelers. However, due to political considerations, e-visas may not be issued to citizens of certain countries. If you’re from one of these countries, you should contact an Iranian diplomatic mission for further instructions.

Important Note for Applicants:

Since COVID-19 (post-2021), many individual e-visa applications submitted through the Foreign Ministry’s website have been rejected based on travelers’ experiences and unwritten policies. However, over 80% of visa applications submitted through Iranian travel agencies are approved.

Note: For a higher chance of approval, we strongly recommend applying through a registered Iranian travel agency.

According to the most recent telephone meeting with the visa approval officer, individuals who have previously traveled to Israel are still eligible to travel to Iran.

It is strongly advised that applicants do not conceal any past travel to Israel from either the travel agency or the visa-issuing authority. Transparency in this matter is essential.

The officer further emphasized that all documents and the applicant’s history will be carefully reviewed during the visa process.

Once the visa has been approved, visitors will not face any problems in Iran and may proceed with their journey in complete safety.

As of May 1, 2025, the following changes apply to Iranian tourist visas:

  • Visa validity reduced: The entry window for all applicants has been shortened from 90 days to 45
  • This means you must enter Iran within 45 days of visa issuance.
  • Stay duration calculated upon entry: Your permitted stay period (typically 30 days, extendable) now begins from the date you arrive in Iran, not the visa issue date.

Citizens of the following jurisdictions do not require a visa for entry to Iran for stays up to the duration listed below for tourism or business purposes (unless otherwise noted):

  • 90 days: Oman, Syria, Turkey.
  • 90 days within any 180 days: Armenia.
  • 45 days: Georgia.
  • 30 days: Bolivia, Lebanon, Iraq, Tajikistan.
  • 21 days: China, Hong Kong, Macao.
  • 20 days: Egypt.

  • Syria, Tajikistan, India: Must enter Iran by air to qualify for visa exemption.
  • All tourists, may stay on Kish Island or Qeshm Island for up to 14 days without obtaining any visa.
  • Citizens of the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom are only required to have a certified escort guide waiting for them upon their arrival.
